Comet Speaks: Fashion Photographer Nick Glover BA’19 Shares His Current Inspiration

Although Nick Glover BA’19 only graduated nine months ago, the fashion photographer has been working toward his career before he enrolled at UT Dallas. Since establishing his photography business, he’s emerged as a respected talent in the fashion industry, with clients such as Dior, W Magazine, Vogue.com and the Dallas Museum of Art. Below, Glover shares the shows he’s looking forward to at this month’s New York Fashion Week (NYFW), as well as what he’s inspired by and what Deep Ellum restaurant he frequents.
Most recent fashion inspirations?
Going off of fall NYFW, I was really impressed by designers Rick Owens, JW Anderson, Roksanda, The Row, Jacquemus and Pyer Moss. Pyer Moss was one of the most beautiful runway shows I’ve seen in a long time. It was a gorgeous celebration of black art and culture, and it left me crying while I was watching the livestream. Couture week also just happened, and I need to give a nod to Jean Paul Gaultier’s final show. He is a master who will be missed on the runway.
Favorite app or gadget?
Probably my room’s AC unit. I need it to be a tundra at all times.
Dallas restaurant that’s a must?
Dallas is such a great spot for foodies, especially for gluten-sensitive folks like myself. My newest favorite since moving to Deep Ellum is Revolver Taco Lounge; the al pastor is my go-to.
Favorite vacation spot?
Los Angeles. It truly has everything — beaches, hills, great food, shopping and great models and creatives if I get the itch to work.
Best advice for aspiring photographers?
Remember you’re never done practicing and to shoot consistently. I used to think, “If I do X amount of shoots, I’ll be a master!” But then you realize that you can always improve your light, editing, posing, etc. I do a lot of portfolio building to keep my skills up and my book fresh.
From a fashion standpoint, I’ve also learned that you need to research and educate your taste. You can have your own core “style,” but remember that trends change, clients will rebrand and you have to move with it to stay in business. I read a lot of European fashion magazines and look at artist agencies in major markets like NYC, London and Paris to keep up with what’s coming next visually.
Most beneficial UTD class?
Emerging Media Production and Mediated Textuality were very project-heavy, which let me create portfolio work that would have never happened otherwise. I was also taught to be more intentional and critical in my art and ask, “How does this impact culture? Is it the way I was intending? How can I use media to create change?”
Stocked in your refrigerator at all times?
At least three flavors of La Croix. Stay hydrated, y’all.
Spring NYFW shows piquing your interest?
The Row and Marc Jacobs. The Row is very much my aesthetic (clean and minimal), and Marc is consistently interesting in a relatively boring NYFW. Other shows on my radar are Blancore, Area, Helmut Lang, Proenza Schouler and Jason Wu.
