Ruth and Ken Altshuler

Benevolent University partners who have championed the Callier Center for Communication Disorders.

Devoted philanthropists, Ruth and Ken Altshuler have played an active role in the medical field throughout the Metroplex, supporting clinical research and academic education for medical centers like UT Southwestern and the Callier Center for Communication Disorders.

Ken and Ruth, who passed away in 2017, established the Callier Care Fund to provide assistance to children and adults with hearing, speech and language disorders regardless of their income, insurance or socioeconomic background. Proceeds from the center’s annual Callier Cares Luncheon benefit the fund.

“Having worked with the deaf in New York, I was struck by the dedication and effectiveness of Callier in treating young deaf children,” said Ken Altshuler, board trustee for the Foundation for the Callier Center.

The Callier Center created the Ruth and Ken Altshuler Callier Care Award in 2012, an award presented annually to an individual or group who has contributed significantly to the community and advances the care of patients with communication disorders.

In 2018, a clinical wing inside the Callier Center Expansion at UT Dallas was named the Altshuler Wing in honor of the couple who has contributed so much to the center.
