Department of Geosciences: Experiencing Transformative Philanthropy
August 31, 2013
Every facet of the University is resonating from the impact of unprecedented campaign support, but the Department of Geosciences in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is being transformed like no other. The department’s evolution comes at a time when the entire geosciences industry is rapidly expanding.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for energy, environmental protection and responsible land and resource management will spur demand for far more geoscientists in the future. That, combined with federal agencies and industry pushing for greater research into new exploration techniques to unlock previously unreachable reserves, equals a gushing demand for geosciences graduates. And UT Dallas aims to answer that appeal.
Key to the development of a geosciences student is the summer field research course and experience in field-based research. UT Dallas students and faculty within the department gain unequaled experience through geologic studies in remote regions with highly specialized research equipment. From exploring the geologic wonders of the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico and Colorado to examining the tectonic processes that formed the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada of Nevada and California, field courses and research projects provide a vital element for the professional growth of both students and faculty.
Through generous donations from alumni, energy companies and vested supporters, such transformative experiences continue to be enhanced year after year.
